More sidenotes

There were many mishaps in this episode:

  • When the two chefs ran for the shark's fin, Chen's assistant ran into Son.  This scene also appears in the intro of the later year episodes.
  • While Chen was picking up the shark's fin, his tray fell down thus spilled about $3,000 worth of this expensive ingredient.  Chen said to Chairman Kaga, "I'm sorry."
  • Son's assistant dropped one glass of dessert (the one with melon puree).  Luckily, there was enough spare ingredients left to make another one up.

My observations:

  •  Both chefs produced something that celebrated the full moon that night.  Chen made rabbits (not supposed to be eaten although that Japanese actor actually did.)
  • Chau Lam was very critical today.  Nevertheless, he voted for Chen in this episode.  The score was 4-1.  (I have noticed that whenever Lam was on the tasting panel, he tended to give Chen lower mark than other judges.  It's probably the same case as when French judges tasted Sakai's French dishes.)
  • Chen was very humble.  At the end of the episode, he thanked his audience and said that his homeland was China and he would keep practicing to enhance his cooking abilities.  He also spoke in Chinese to Son to thank the latter for the competition.  (That's probably why I gradually became Chen's fan.  I like his attitude a lot.  He knows that he is good, but he never brags.  And he always respect his challengers.)
  • China concluded that Son didn't really lose out because he had already won once in the pre-battle.  The end of this episode somehow hinted that the battle between the two might resume in the future.
